IT by Alexa Chung

Being naturally not much of a reader, I of course had to make an exception for Alexa Chung and purchase her debut book simply titled 'It'. Published in 2013 I'm about 2 years too late, but my obsession for her only recently kick-started after a late night visit to Alex Turner and Alexa Chung dedicated tumblr pages - cringe. Alexa is no doubt an It Girl of the 21st century, and the self confessed groupie has listed her somewhat strange style icons in this book, pulling inspiration from the likes of Wednesday Adams and even her own grandfather.

Even for me, I found this book to be quite a quick read. However, the lack of words is quickly made up for by the vast amount of personal photographs and doodles; a real insight into Alexa's life and musings. The top 10 best seller covers everything from heartbreak, to how to get dressed in the morning, and even tips for the perfect selfie (it helps if you have Alexa Chung's face). If you're looking for a witty read, I'd definitely recommend 'It' - also available in paperback.

Mermaid Heels

On my recent trip to Dublin I picked up these beautiful heels in Penney's (our Primark), that can't help but make me channel my inner mermaid. They're maybe the most beautiful shoes I've ever purchased and just happened to be a bargain at €18. They really do shine in their blue and green glory, in real life like they do in these pictures - I haven't edited these one bit! Plus, not only do they look the part but they're also quite comfy thanks to the thick heel. However, not so ideal on Dublin cobbles. As we all know, Primark/Penney's don't have an online store (sob), but I'm pretty sure these will still be in store. Fingers crossed!

Olivia Burton - Personalised Big Dial

I've just turned 22, and for my birthday my lovely mum was kind enough to get me this gorgeous Olivia Burton watch. My mum, like I'm sure a lot of mums, needed a few little hints and maybe a not-so-obvious link or 2 to the Olivia Burton website! I've wanted a watch for a while now but was fed up with everyone having a Michael Kors or Marc Jacobs on their wrist. Daniel Wellington watches had caught my eye, but it wasn't until my friends were eyeing up the Olivia Burton watches, that I soon fell for the brand. I'm basically copying my friend Kathryn, who had the genius idea of ordering an Olivia Burton straight from the ASOS website to benefit from the student discount. Fun fact - the duo behind the brand actually have fashion experience in buying for ASOS and even Selfridges.

The Olivia Burton brand is the genius love child of the duo Lesa Bennett and Jemma Fennings, who met on their first day at London College of Fashion, cute! And there was me thinking it was created by someone called Olivia Burton. Wanting to make a statement with my watch, I opted for the big dial in black, with a matching black soft leather strap and gold frame. I also received a gold Alex and Ani bracelet for my birthday from my friend Lauren, that goes perfectly with this watch - blog post coming soon.

Having received this for my birthday I wanted it to be extra special, so I added the personalised option on the Olivia Burton website. For an extra £30 you can choose up to 6 letters (A-Z only in caps) to be embossed on the leather wrist strap. After an extensive Google search I could only find 1 example of their personalised watches, so I'm hoping these pictures will help anyone thinking of paying the extra money. My name is 6 letters long, but rather than the obvious 'Hannah' I opted for 'HM' instead, 'M' being the initial of both my middle and last name - safe for if I ever get married in the distant distant future! If I'm being honest, I'm a little disappointed that the embossing isn't that clear, but it doesn't make me love my watch any less! I'm more of a less-is-more kind of girl but if that isn't your thing, they have a ton of illustrated and colourful watches to choose from.

Camilla - Public Desire

You can't go wrong with a pair of nude heels, and I've just picked up these beauties from Public Desire for a bargain £27.99. (If you have a Unidays account you can also get 10% off.) 'Camilla' is comfortable to wear, high but not break-your-ankle high, and also comes in black and white. The gold metallic heel is definitely a step up from your average strappy shoe. Public Desire have only just turned 1 this week - meaning the future can only bring more great shoes!

Salt House Charcuteria and Tapas Bar, Liverpool

Churros with cinammon sugar and chocolate dipping pot, £4.95

I'm just back from a few days in Liverpool visiting my cousin. Every time I visit, I never want to leave! I haven't been to many cities but this one might just be my favourite. It's not surprising that Liverpool John Moores is the #1 choice of university for Northern Irish school leavers. One of the places I went to for food just so happened to be Salt House Charcuteria and Tapas Bar on Hanover Street - purely for the promise of churros on the dessert menu. Come on, I mean look at them!

'Malaga Fried Fish' - fried calamari, prawns, and cod, £5.95

This was my first time at a tapas bar and like we did, I'm pretty sure most diners will share dishes - because they're small it means ordering something you haven't tried before, isn't as risky. Food comes out as it's cooked, meaning you can eat confidently knowing your plate has come out fresh and hasn't been sitting under a hot lamp for the last 15 minutes! However, I can imagine this has made for some awkward dates in the past if you've decided not to share and waited for your other half's food.

Char grilled fillet steak with pomme puree, shallots, and pepper sauce, £7.95

Libby's toast with aioli, £2.95

Don't be fooled by the idea of small dishes, we left feeling fuller than ever. In hindsight we definitely should have ordered less dishes for 2 people, but it's just so hard to decide with all of the yummy choices and reasonable prices. My favourites had to be the Libby toast to start (the aioli is to die for), the crispy fried potatoes (spicy), and not to forget the churros to finish, if you can! I'm not much of a seafood girl but the prawns were surprisingly good too. We ate from the main menu but you can see their full list of menus here. Aside from their mouth watering food, Salt House are fully licensed and offer a range of cocktails. Thankfully it was lunch time and I decided to behave myself.

Crisp fried potatos with harissa red pepper salsa and regato cheese, £4.50 & Sauteed baby chorizo with honey, £4.95

MAC Haul

116 Blush Brush

Until recently, I'd favoured other brands over MAC brushes and most of my collection is from Real Techniques. I still love Real Techniques, but it wasn't until I lost their Contour brush (which isn't sold separately), that I was dying to find a brush similar. My friend Lauren let me try her 116 brush, and it was love at first blend. The 116 is small enough to fit the contours of my cheeks perfectly, but isn't overly dense so any powder is easily blended. The MAC 116 brush also has a longer brush handle than the Real Technique contour brush. The longer handle allows for lighter application - hold the handle nearer the end for less pressure. The one downside to this brush is that it's prone to casting bristles and leaving them on my face. I'm hoping after continuous use or washing, it will eventually stop shedding.

Pro Longwear Concealer

I'd been experimenting with a few high street concealers from ELF to Rimmel with good results, but longed for something with better coverage. I've used MAC concealers in the past including their Studio Fix, and Mineralize concealers. I found Mineralize to be a good concealer but wanted something with more coverage, and although Studio Fix covers basically anything, it was quite drying and cakey around my eye area. However, in my opinion their Pro Longwear concealer combines the best of both. Its provides a good buildable coverage, isn't drying or cakey and perfect for the under eye area. It also comes with a handy mess-free pump. I went for shade NC20, a shade lighter than my foundation.

Lip Pencils - 'Stripdown' and 'Oak'

I've been on a search for the perfect nude lip pencil for what seems like forever. I prefer lip liners over lipsticks purely because of the precision on application and I find them a lot longer lasting. Lean towards a liner if you're after that Kylie Jenner overdrawn look. I fell in love with Collection 2000's bargain lip liner in 'Nude Rose' which is the perfect pink shade without being frosty in colour, but can be a bit drying. After many Instagram and Google searches for swatches, I narrowed it down to 2 MAC pencils and couldn't pick between them. When the 2 shades arrived, their tips where basically identical and it's only on application that you can see a shade difference.

Oak is my go-to day time shade. It's light enough for a natural look, but not so light that my nude lips look covered in foundation (awful teen makeup flash backs). Think of it as a 'your lips but better' kind of shade. Stripdown however, is slightly darker and warmer in colour. It's one that I would wear mostly at night and is neutral enough that it can be paired with almost any eye makeup. I'd describe both pencils as to put it frankly - shades of brown, but I remember reading somewhere that apparently brown lips suits everyone. The pencils are on the more expensive side but the quality and length is well worth it.

Left, Oak. Right, Stripdown.

Studio Fix Fluid (Sample)

Studio Fix Fluid - the first high end foundation I tried and loved in my teens. I've used Studio Fix for years and only recently switched to Estee Lauder's Double Wear (you can read a comparison of the 2 here). Receiving this sample made me doubt why I had ever switched in the first place. However, after wearing it for a few days I noticed my skin got drier than usual and the foundation never lasted a full 8 hour shift in work, back to Double Wear! Shade NC25 is perfect for me and I tend to stick to yellow based foundations because I find them to be more flattering.

Si | Giorgio Armani

'The fragrance opens with notes of Sicilian Bergamot, Mandarin oil and Liquer de Cassis which is supported by a heart which bursts with Rose de Mai absolute, Neroli absolute and Egyptian Jasmine absolute. Warm undertones caress the unique chypre base notes of Patchouli oil intertwined with Blond Woods, amber and musky undertones known as Orcanox™. Finished with a sweet animalic accord of Vanille absolute which, gives this fragrance, longevity and an unforgettable sillage.' - The Perfume Shop.

Yeah, whatever they said. I wouldn't exactly use (or be able to pronounce) half of the words written above if I was asked to describe how 'Si' smelt to me. I would however, say how after one spray it makes me feel like the Sasha Fierce I long to be. For those that didn't get that Beyoncé reference, shame on you.

I get a bit overwhelmed when it comes to choosing a new scent and I'll normally grab the most extravagant looking perfume bottles to try (queue anything by Marc Jacobs). So I was skeptical at first when the sales assistant in my local Boots handed me a modest looking bottle of simply 'Si'. It's no Chanel No.5 love story but the TV advert featuring a very flirty Cate Blanchett had caught my eye.

That day in Boots I said 'yes' to 'Si' and bought a 30ml bottle of the Eau de Parfum, which didn't last me nearly as long as I'd have liked. When it comes to buying luxury cosmetics it's always good to get something in return, whether it be a free gift, or Boots points for those last minute buys before a night out. The Perfume Shop are currently giving out complimentary miniature sets with purchases of 'Si' and I couldn't say no - this time I went for the 50ml bottle at £66.50. Giorgio Armani also sell an Eau de Toilette version which is slightly less expensive, but being heavily influenced by my mother who refuses to wear anything other than Eau de Parfum, I went for something that lingered a little longer on the skin. Quality over quantity.

I have virtually no skills when it comes to describing perfume, but blackcurrant and vanilla are 2 scents that stand out for me as I write this. It's elegant and feminine, first sprays make me feel sleepy for lack of a better word, and a little sexy - if this perfume were a song it might go a little something like this. If you're a fan of sweet scents then this Giorgio Armani perfume just might be the one for you.

SUPERCAT

I'm a sucker for a cat eye, but who isn't? For a while now I had just been using a kohl pencil on my lid, but thought that the colour wasn't strong enough. I then came across Soap & Glory's Supercat which just so happens to be blacker than black and super intense. The eyeliner is almost like a felt tip and it's very easy to use - the dense tip gives me enough control to get right up against my lashline without causing havoc.

I'd definitely recommend Supercat if you're an eyeliner beginner or just not a confident 'flicker'. Other eyeliners I've experimented with tend to have longer applicators that aren't stiff enough to guarantee perfect precision each time. I've also had experience with liners flaking but this stuff will last you all day and isn't the slightest bit drying.

If you find it difficult to apply liner it can be easier to go step-by-step, repeating each part alternatively on each eye so as to keep things symmetrical. You can also practice your liner with a pencil first getting your basic shape, and then apply a liquid over the top if you're nervous. Also, if you're not sure of what shape to follow, simply imagine the curve of your lower lashline continuing on and the same angle - easy! Oh, did I forget to mention that it's only £6. I know, amazing right?

KUESHI PURE AND CLEAN FACIAL TONER

Say 'hello!' to Kueshi - the best thing to happen to my skin since I discovered Freederm's moisturiser. I first discovered the Kueshi 'Pure and Clean Revitalizing Face Toner' in my January 2015 Glossybox, and was pleasantly surprised because previous toners I'd tried had left my skin feeling dry and tight.

On first impressions the toner exceeded my expectations and left my skin feeling soft and clean, revealing makeup clogging my pores that I thought I had previously removed (goodbye breakouts). After a few weeks of using this twice daily, I noticed a huge difference in my skin. Not only was my face feeling moisturised and clean, but I had fewer breakouts and found my skin looking alot calmer. I'm not quite ready to go sans-makeup yet but this is definitely a step in the right direction.

"Revitalizing Toner moisturizes and re-balances skin, providing a sensation of freshness and softness with optimal results. Thanks to a combination of moisturizers and natural ingredients, the formula restores perfect balance to the skin. Controls shine in oily-prone areas and softens dry areas, leaving the skin feeling comfortable, fresh, healthy and perfectly clean." - Glossybox.co.uk

A downside to this toner, and maybe the only one, is that it's not easy to get hold of. Unfortunately it's not available in any high street shops that I know of, possibly due to the fact that Kueshi is a Spanish based company. I had trouble tracking down this exact toner online however, their astringent containing alcohol can be bought for £12 with free delivery here. Alcohol can dry out the skin so I'd recommend trying to get your hands on this type if you've sensitive or dry skin normally.

Added bonus - that's not a coloured bottle, the toner is actually pink.

NEW LOOK

You might have noticed that things on here have been looking a little different recently. Feeling unhappy with my blog layout and lacking inspiration I stumbled upon Pipdig and found some lovely Blogger themes (their premade themes range from £29 to £39). I'm a fan of simple, clean blogs with the 'less is more' look, so I chose theme 'Minim' and found it easy to install thanks to the instructions they supply. It's also relatively easy to customise colours and fonts - Pipdig offer semi-custom designs and fully custom designs too, if you're looking for something unique.

VITA LIBERATA TAN

Personally, I can't go on a night out without looking like I've stepped off a flight fresh from Ibiza. Having a tan is the confidence boost that comes before dutch courage - sporting a tan makes most women feel slimmer and frankly more attractive, one woman being me. I've been through my fair share of fake tan with Rimmel, St Moriz and Lauren's Way to name a few, but Vita Liberata is my new found favourite. The above photo shows the tan fully developed.

For a girl that's been loyal to £2.99 St Moriz tan for years now, it was always going to take something amazing to make me sway.  At the slightly more expensive price of £22.50 a bottle, it definitely makes up for quality. Not only does this tan look a lot more natural on me, it's also odourless before it develops, and can last up to 7 days. Depending on your skin and tan preference you may disagree, but I recommend trying before buying if you can - I experimented using my housemate's.

Like a good friend would, Lauren is demonstrating the tanning results straight after application. The tan hasn't started to develop but has already improved her colour dramatically - see first picture for full development. We experimented with the Vita Liberata mousse on her upper body but the tan was barely showing, and it had an almost green tinge to it. I much prefer lotion when it comes to tan. I find that lotion is easier to apply, especially when it comes down to tanning your back alone!

In this post I've used the 4-7 Day Tinted Tan Lotion, in Dark/Extra Rich. I'm no stranger to fake tan so Extra Rich (dark) is ideal for my skin, but beginners may want to start with Rich (medium). I'd love to try their darkest shade, but maybe closer to Summer. As always with any fake tan, I'd recommend exfoliating and moisturising days prior to application for baby soft skin. Unlike other brands I've seen, Vita Liberata recommend avoiding moisturiser before use but I tend to stick only to my dryest areas - knees, elbows and ankles. Happy tanning!

SEACRET - MINERAL RICH PEELING GEL

I hadn't heard of the Arizona based brand Seacret until I had visited Budapest, and was given a demonstration by a very enthusiastic sales assistant from their store in the Westend Shopping Centre. I was told their Mineral-Rich Peeling Gel was best suited for my skin - suitable for all skin types but acts as an exfoliator, removing dead skin cells and leaving your face clean and purified. The main ingredients include minerals from the Dead Sea, cucumber, aloe vera, camomile, and ginseng, and the gel has the most gorgeous scent - so clean and refreshing. All Seacret products are extracted from salts and minerals from the Dead Sea, and are manufactured in Israel.

As I was wearing makeup at the time, they demonstrated by applying peeling gel to the back of my hand. After applying the gel and waiting around 1 minute, I watched as my dead skin literally rubbed away. Not only did the skin on my hand appear brighter and softer but it absorbed more moisturiser than the hand that hadn't be treated - a better way to get the most out of your products. After using this for a weeks at home I've noticed a big difference in my skin - it's not only a lot smoother and calmer but I've also had fewer breakouts. I'm assuming that my skin is loving the Dead Sea minerals and the fact that it actually has a chance to absorb moisturiser. I don't ever think I've treated my skin this kindly!

After being quite hesitant at the price tag, me and my friend were offered one each for half price - too good to refuse. We bought the peeling gel for roughly 12,500 forints which works out at around £30. I was told that the gel should be used roughly once a week to remove dead skin cells, but on the Seacret website it advises customers to use it daily (I'm guessing this depends on the current state of your skin). After purchasing, we were given free vouchers for fish pedicures in the Seacret store. Although hesitant at first, and extremely nervous, I let the tiny fish eat dead skin off of my feet. It sounds awful but it felt ticklish at worst and my feet were so much smoother after. My friend Lauren purchased their nail buffing block that gives an impressive shine which can last up to a week - you also get given replacement buffing strips for free at any Seacret store.

Check out the Arizona based company on twitter here.

BUDAPEST 2015

I'm recently back from a 4 night trip to Budapest, Hungary and I've absolutely fallen in love with the city. Me and my friend Lauren flew from Dublin and stayed in the Soho Boutique hotel which was quite central for shops and restaurants. The trip was a bit of an impulse booking as we managed to get a deal for £169 each including flights, from our local travel agents.

We tried our best to research things to do in Budapest before we actually went, and thermal baths proved to be popular with tourists. The two main thermal baths in the city are the Gellert and the Szechenyi, both at opposite sides of the city. We visited the Szechenyi baths on the Pest side of the city, in the late afternoon and were able to bathe in the dark.

We booked our tickets for the bath at our hotel (at no extra rate) and brought our own towels - they charge extra to rent towels, swimwear and flip flops if you haven't brought your own. Dressing gowns are also available to rent out but we just about managed the cold dash from the pool without them. The baths are amazing - it's so surreal bathing in the dark and sitting in 35C water when the air above is verging on freezing - the result is a steamy scene like something out of a dream!

We spent most of our time walking around Budapest, not only was it cheaper than local taxis but was probably to best way to sight see. We came across many local shops and restaurants like this cute little bakery 'According to my Mum'.

Eager to see the most of Budapest, we headed to the Central Market Hall, the oldest indoor market and where locals normally buy their fresh fruit and meat. The main floor of the market is mostly food and the upstairs is packed with souvenirs that tend to be cheaper than most shops. I managed to pick up a Budapest tshirt and scarf for around £3 each. Budapest have forints for currency and the country is very inexpensive with £10 working out as 4134 forints. We used an app that allowed us to convert Hungarian currency to pounds before we bought anything, without having to use data abroad.

Aside from the markets and local shops, we headed to West End shopping centre located next to the train station and bought lots of goodies to take home. The shopping centre has an impressive 4 floors and boasts over 400 shops including a whole floor dedicated to food - it's honestly food shop after food shop and so much to choose from.

We came across a store 'Women's Secret' which is basically Europe's answer to Victoria's Secret and I picked up some cute sleepwear. Aside from European stores, the shopping centre boasts global brands like Mango and H&M but with cheaper price tags. I managed to pick up a cream faux fur coat in Mango for £60 when it's actually in UK stores at £80.

I'm a bit of a fussy eater so we played it safe and visited Hard Rock Cafe in the centre of Budapest. Although it was my first time you can't go wrong with a familiar menu and yummy cocktails. We liked the place so much that we actually went back twice and were served by some lovely waiters.

Trying to fit as much into our 4 days as possible, we made a day trip to Budapest Zoo! We went near closing time and the weather was quite nippy, so the zoo was reasonably empty. The zoo had all the animals you could think of and more, including a few animals I couldn't name. They even have an Australian zone where you can roam freely among emus and wallabies, and even pet them if you're brave enough (I wasn't).

I had the best time in Budapest and would love to go back. This was my first real city break and I honestly think I preferred it to beach holidays. I'd love to visit other cities especially Paris, but what girl wouldn't? I'd highly recommend Budapest as an inexpensive holiday destination. We were expecting to arrive and see snow but the weather was very similar, if not warmer than Northern Ireland - locals also tell us that summer is very warm.

Viszlát Budpest!
