MAC Velvet Teddy Lipstick, Swatch and Review

I'm slowly trying to build some sort of MAC lipstick collection and I recently purchased their lovely Velvet Teddy shade. (See the review and swatch for Dark Side here.) I went through many reviews from other beauty bloggers in search of the perfect nude and bought Velvet Teddy from the MAC website. In reality I'd love to have been able to 'try before I buy' but it's difficult when your nearest MAC retailer is an hours train ride away, sigh.

Velvet Teddy has a matte finish which I prefer when choosing a lipstick, although it's creamy enough so that it doesn't appear 'cakey' or dry on your lips. MAC describes it as a 'deep-tone beige' and although other beauty gurus have described this as their perfect nude it's probably best for someone wearing NC40; a teeny bit too dark to be considered nude for me but still a great colour! Like the majority of MAC lipsticks it's highly pigmented and shows up well on your lips, it's staying power is impressive too.

As you can probably tell from the swatch (above) it packs a little pink punch and isn't just your basic beige, a great way to inject some subtle colour  into your look. Although I've mentioned it's a little bit too dark to be considered a nude for me, it's still wearable for day time and looks great with a tan - it was a nice surprising shade when it came in the post.

My sister Ellie playing lipstick model

If you're fair skinned like me and looking for a darker-than-normal-nude, I'd definitely recommend this. It's a great grab and go lipstick for daily wear - MAC's done it again, lovely lipstick with a perfect matte finish and long wearing.

Pin Me

My lovely housemate Emma introduced me to the world of Pinterest after being somewhat addicted to it herself. I didn't realise how inspiring Pinterest can be, there are literally millions of images. I raced to find beauty boards and came across some stunning images. Here are the images that I found to be the most inspiring.

Happy pinning!

Estée Lauder Double Wear VS MAC Studio Fix Fluid

Well, this is a biggie. After hearing so much about these foundations from other beauty gurus and being fortunate enough to try out the two, I’ve decided to make life a lot easier for my readers and write a review!

Here are the basics you need to know - all information was found on either the Estée Lauder or MAC website.

Promises to
“Be lightweight and comfortable. Stay fresh and natural through heat, humidity and nonstop activity. Won’t change colour, smudge or come off on clothes.”
“Be comfortable and long-wearing. Minimise appearance of pores. Absorbs and disperses oil.”

I first began using more high end foundations when I watched beauty guru Fafinettex3 use MAC Studio Fix Fluid on Youtube and thought, “I need that foundation”. That was in 2009 when I was just 16 according to my previous MAC orders, and once it came along there was no going back! It was only last year I picked up Estée Lauder’s Double Wear after watching Pixiwoo use it in a makeup tutorial. I find that cheaper foundations don’t sit as well on my skin, don’t come in a vast range of colours and have considerably less staying power. In my opinion I’d rather spend a little more on foundation and use cheaper eyeshadows etc. to ensure a good base – a good canvas can improve the application and look of other products on your skin.

Although both foundations are 30ml in size, Estée Lauder is a little bit more expensive at £28.50 compared to MAC’s price of £21.50. 30ml doesn’t sound like much but it lasts me a long time, I’ll wear it on a daily basis and I’ll not have to order another for about 3 to 4 months. Buying a pump for your foundation can mean less mess and wastage. I bought a pump for £4 from the MAC website which works wonders but unfortunately Estée Lauder doesn’t stock any. There are however different unbranded pumps available on eBay that promise to fit Estée Lauder I’m just not sure of their reliability.

I’d recommend firstly getting a consultant to match your foundation colour in store or even apply samples yourself to find the closest colour to your jaw, and then you can order online in future if it’s more convenient. I’ll wear MAC’s NC30 which matches me when I wear fake tan, and Estée Lauder’s Dawn shade which is a little lighter. Although both foundations are a somewhat darker than my natural skin tone I’ll regularly wear fake tan and just bronze my neck when I’m paler. MAC have 40 different foundation colours in cool and warm shades, where as Estée Lauder have 31 in cool, warm and neutral colours. I wore MAC’s cool yellow based foundation because I found their warm shades to be a little too pink for me and very unflattering;  Estée Lauder’s warm shades on the other hand look a lot more natural and suit me better.

Both foundations are oil free and promise a somewhat matte finish. Although Estée Lauder states a semi-matte finish I found it to be more matte than MAC, a lot of the reviews online are similar and are from disappointed customers with oily skin! MAC’s staying power is also considerably less than Estée Lauder and in my opinion doesn’t even live up to its 8 hour expectation – throughout the day I’ll get extremely oily and any slight contact with my face means bye bye foundation. Estée Lauder lasts much longer and I’ll never have to touch up with powder when I’m out, it also doesn’t smudge easily or come off on clothes. I think the true test of foundation is to wear it to work, with MAC I find by the end of my shift I’m left with super shiny skin but Estée Lauder remains matte.

If you have oily skin I’d recommended Estée Lauder Double Wear; MAC just doesn’t have the power to stay matte. I have mostly dry skin with a somewhat oily nose but I make sure to moisturise before applying my primer and Estée Lauder foundation, I’ll also only apply pressed powder to my t-zone. Estée Lauder is also more forgiving on your skin, I’ve found from personal experience and online reviews that MAC can appear slightly cakey and its consistency is slightly thicker.

Each offers a medium-buildable coverage which I won’t argue with. They can take you from day to night depending on how much coverage you need and applied correctly they minimise imperfections and pores. I had previously used the ELF Studio Stipple Brush but now I’m in love with the Real Techniques Buffing Brush because it gives such a flawless finish. Estée Lauder can feel slightly heavier on your skin but because I wear it on a daily basis I’m used to it. Both have a sort of chemical, medicinal smell that you expect from a foundation but I found MAC to be incredibly stronger.

If you can’t already tell I’m a bit biased towards Estée Lauder. I had switched to it last year from MAC and haven’t gone back since.  I find that overall it just suits my skin better and lasts all day. Although it’s a little bit more expensive I’m happy enough to pay for something that looks good on my skin and stays matte. I’d recommend Estée Lauder Double Wear to someone looking for a medium-full coverage that lasts all day and who has an oily t-zone. Overall it really comes down to your skin type and what type of coverage or finish you’re looking for, I know other people would disagree and opt for MAC or a different foundation entirely. It’s all about experimenting and finding the foundation best for you!

Thanks for reading. If you have any questions about either foundation that I haven’t covered in this post, don’t hesitate to ask!

What's in My Bag?

Just a little post about what’s currently in my handbag. I bought a new bag from Primark a few weeks ago for a lovely £6 and although it’s quite small it makes room for all of my daily essentials.

Before I leave the house I try to do a mental check, “Phone. Keys. Money.”, most of those lay about my bag loose and I’m awful at putting change away so I’ll normally find a cheeky tenner when I least expect it. Other than the basics I’ll grab makeup before I leave so I can do touch ups during the day – usually concealer, eyeliner, a lippy and lipbalm. It’s not very often I’ll actually touch up my makeup, I think it’s more of a comfort knowing it’s there if I need to (vain, I know).

Dental sticks, a hair clip and a few rings that I’ve thrown off, also often gather in my bag. In order to (desperately try to) improve my organisational skills I carry around a little handbag sized diary which is handy to jot down university deadlines and work rotas.

In reality I’d love to carry my whole bedroom around with me but I doubt I’d ever find a handbag big enough!

Home Comforts

I’ve been a bit naughty with my student loan recently and bought a few things to make my uni room a little cosier. I’m lucky enough to have a neutral coloured room which means I’ve got freedom to play around with bright bed sheets and don’t have to face ugly curtains/wallpaper - ew.  Here are a few buys I’ve made for my home-from-home.

Some of these are either discontinued or I can't remember where there from since I've had them a while - sorry!

My housemate Laura – Edie’s Trust Fund – has these little buddhas in her room, I love them so much I had to buy them too!

Set of 3 Buddhas, £4.99, Dunelm Mill | Candle Holder, B&M | Sun & Sand Sampler, £1.99, Yankee Candle (eBay)

I know my bed covers seem quite Christmassy but I still have them on – they’re just so lovely and homely anddd it’s still winter so technically it’s fine right? I sleep with my furry pillow every night and didn’t think I’d find anything softer until Dunelm’s Teddy Bear Throw came along – it’s made of baby clouds and marshmallows.

Duvet Cover, Dunelm Mill (Limited Edition) | Teddy BearThrow in Cream, £9.99, Dunelm Mill | Luxe Faux Fur Cushion, £18, Next | Love & Cuddles Cushion, Sainsburys

I developed a bit of an addiction with Instagram during last year (everything’s better with a filter) so I was so excited when I found Inkifi. On Inkifi‘s website you can upload your pictures directly from your Instagram account and just wait for the print outs to come in the post! They’re pricing is reasonable and these Polaroid style prints are just 1 of many design options.

Jewellery Box & Trinket Box, B&M | White Wicker Heart, £3.99, DunelmMill

I hope you liked seeing a little snippet of my bedroom!

Lush Tisty Tosty Bath Bomb

After seeing so many bloggers rave about Lush handmade bath bombs I decided to venture in today, during a shopping trip to Belfast, to see what all the fuss was about! After smelling basically everything in the shop I purchased their 'Tisty Totsy' bath bomb. It smells amazing - so comforting and definitely one to buy if you have trouble relaxing/sleeping.

Putting my new Primark jumper to good use!

It's beautiful scent is a combination of 'floral orris root powder, rose and lemon', and it's also studded with 7 real rosebuds that float in the bath. It reminded me of talc at first but my sense of smell is the worst.

Note the copy of 'Look' Magazine - a must when your phone dies mid train journey.

Another plus is the über-cute packaging, it comes dated in a little paper bag with instructions for your brand new bath bomb. Lets hope this little Lush love spell has some truth in it!

"This ballistic is a love spell.
Fill the bath, get in, hold the ballistic in your hands whilst contemplating your chosen one.
Lower into the water to unleash its powerful magic.
Watch the seven rosebuds emerge from the swirling potion and count your way to a budding romance."

At £3.25 each they're just too good to resist. I rarely take baths (I'm more of a shower kinda gal) but I predict myself converting, or at least every time there's a lush bath bomb near. If you're more of a shower lover too then you might fancy trying their shower jelly - it's smells and looks exactly like the jelly you eat. I'm not sure how practical shower jelly is but it smells scrummy!

Other bath goodies that caught my eye include...

Apologies for the crappy pics, I tried to take iPhone snaps quickly without looking like too much of a creep.

I was originally going to buy the 'Ickle Baby Bot' bath bomb before I decided on 'Tisty Tosty' - it's a lavendar bath bomb used to help babies get to sleep, but it must work on adults too riiiight? Their 'Honey I Washed The Kids' hand and body soap is yummy too, and if you're looking for something refreshing 'Avobath' is one to try (no picture, sorry).

I think I've found my new favourite shop! The gorgeous scents, packaging and oh-so-cute names have got me over excited about taking a bath. I'm yet to try my 'Tisty Totsy' but I just know it's going to be the best bath I've had in years, literally.
